Photosynthetic potentials of in vitro-grown juvenile, adult, and rejuvenated Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl. shoots

چکیده
In vitro shoot tips of Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don.) Endl.including a juvenile, two adult, and two rejuvenated adult cloneswere examined for differences in basic physiological characteristics. Moisture contents were the same, around 85%, for all tissues regardless of origin. Growth rates, determined by fresh weight increase and shoot elongation, were higher for the juvenile and rejuvenated shoots. They correlated with higher total nitrogen contents. Juvenile and rejuvenated shoots also showed higher rates of photosynthesis and respiration, evidenced by faster O2 evolution and consumption. The photosynthetic rates were associated with more chlorophyll, especially chlorophyll a, in the juvenile and the rejuvenated shoots. Nevertheless, identical quantum efficiencies of photosystem II indicated the same photosystems were operating and with equal effectiveness in juvenile, adult, and rejuvenated tissues.

Association of mitochondrial plasmids with rejuvenation of the coastal redwood, Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl
Repeated grafting of shoot apices from mature Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl. trees onto young seedling shoots in vitro causes emergence of rejuvenated, or phase-reversed, scion shoots. The phase reversal is indicated by a restored rooting competence and renewed vigor of roots and shoots. We earlier reported of restriction fragment length polymorphism between juvenile or rejuvenated and adu...

Wood properties of giant sequoia (Sequoia gigantea [Lindl.] Decne.) were compared with those for other coniferous tree species. Wood properties such as specific gravity, various mechanical properties, extractive content, and decay resistance of young-growth giant sequoia are comparable to or more fa vorable than those of coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens [D. Rhizonema sequoiae n.gen, u. sp. is described from the roots of Coast Redwood, Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl., growing near Lake Lagunitas, Marin County, California. Rhizonema females are annulated over their entire bodies, are wholly embedded in host tissue, and secrete an abundant amount of gel material. Mature females do not form a cyst. The vulva is located on a large posterior termina...

Nematode tunnels are filled with a gel material and ...

Coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens (Lamb. ex. D. Timber harvesting in the native redwood range along the coast of the western United States has necessitated restoration aimed to promote old forest structures to increase the total amount of ...
